Because I lacked money and other extraordinary advantages that make relocation easier, I searched for alternative ways to make this dream come true.

I personally tried several German programs, and now I help others relocate through them while generously sharing important information tested through my own experience.

How did it all begin?

1. The Au Pair cultural exchange program (living with a host family) — becoming a guest in a German family with children

This is the program through which I moved and began my journey in Germany. Its name translates from French as "on equal terms," because the participant and the host family are equals here, and both sides benefit.

The concept is simple: a young person comes from another country to live with a family, help around the house and with the children, and receive payment starting from € 355 per month. At the same time, the host family covers meals, accommodation, insurance, and language courses.

For the participant, this is an opportunity to obtain a visa with minimal requirements, immerse themselves in another culture, learn the language, and adapt to life in the country. Educational background is not important here — I didn’t even have a diploma.

I lived with a family with two children in the city of Lübeck — a brother and a younger sister. My responsibilities included helping around the house, taking care of the children, taking them to school activities, and walking the dog. For this, I received € 300 while having almost no expenses because the family covered all basic needs.

Key points:

• A simple start for young people in Germany
• Age limit up to 27 years old
• No special skills, language knowledge, or higher education required
• Living with a German family
• Paid language courses up to B1
• Monthly stipend
• Health insurance covered by the family
• Opportunity to continue education in Germany or find employment

One challenge is that misunderstandings with the host family may arise because you live under the same roof constantly. There are several of them: the Voluntary Social Year (FSJ), the Voluntary Ecological Year (FÖJ), the European Solidarity Corps (ESC), and the Federal Volunteer Service (BFD). The latter has no upper age limit — anyone from 18 years old can participate!

All of them have very low requirements regarding education and language skills: even a 9th-grade school certificate and basic A1 German, which can be learned from scratch in a couple of months, are enough.

Each program involves one year of volunteer work in social, cultural, ecological, or other fields, with the possibility of extending it up to 18 months. And no, it is not unpaid, despite what people usually think about volunteering. Your private accommodation, meals, health insurance, transportation pass, language courses, and up to € 1,200 per month as "pocket money" are covered. Due to their special status, these "pocket money" payments ("Taschengeld") are tax-free.

It is a great way to "try out" life in Germany without major investments. I had my own kitchen, separate bathroom, workspace, and bed. Everything was new: the mattress and even the cutlery and dishes. However, the work does take a full 8-hour day, so combining it with something else is unlikely.
Did you know that in Germany you can not only study for free, but also get paid while studying?

      <turbo:content>

Where and How to Study in Germany for Free: A Breakdown Based on Personal Experience

Everyone already knows that German education is highly respected worldwide and is considered free even for foreigners. Meanwhile, Germany’s economy remains the leader of the European Union, creating new jobs every minute. But did you know that in Germany you can not only study for free, but also receive a salary while studying?

My name is Artem Shevtsov, and in this article I want to share a personal discovery that helped me earn a European diploma in the medical field with minimal expenses.

Seven years ago, I completely immersed myself in studying articles, forums, and documents to find the best way to enroll in Germany. Many people say that studying at prestigious German universities is free… But when I learned all the admission details, it turned out that for an ordinary family from Russia it was still unaffordable.

Let’s first break down why that is, and then I’ll tell you about an alternative path that became my salvation and led me to my goal without major investments.

Option 1: Standard Admission to a German University

Is it really free?

First of all, you still have to pay: semester fees are around € 300−500. Secondly, to obtain a visa you need to open a blocked account and deposit at least € 12,096 per year at the time of writing this article (March 2025). You’ll need to replenish it every year, and the required amount will only continue to grow.

And of course, housing, food, and insurance are also your responsibility — around € 1,000 per month. Although with a student visa you can work 20 hours a week, and such a salary might even be enough, you won’t be working in your field and will have to combine work with studies. That means classes in the morning and work in the evening — in such a rhythm, burnout comes quickly.

What You Need for Admission

A regular 11-year school diploma is not enough. Citizens of CIS countries need either to study at a specialized preparatory department for foreign applicants at German universities (Studienkolleg) or complete one year of university studies in their home country. This is because German school students study for 13 years, which creates a difference in educational levels during admission.

A preparatory college (Studienkolleg) is a division of a university where applicants compensate for differences in educational systems, study German, and adapt to life in Germany.

To study at a Studienkolleg, you need a B1 level of German confirmed by one of the following certificates:

Goethe Zertifikat B1 or higher

Telc Zertifikat B1 or higher

ÖSD Zertifikat B1 or higher

TestDaF Zertifikat with at least 3333

DSD Zertifikat I or higher

For admission to a university, language requirements rise to C1, confirmed by one of these certificates:

TestDaF Zertifikat with at least 4444

telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule Zertifikat

DSD Zertifikat II

DSH Zertifikat II

Don’t forget about the motivation letter, the full package of documents, and entrance exams. The latter are usually held for admission to Studienkolleg or creative specialties.

At the same time, there are programs in public universities where almost anyone can enroll, while others have competitive admission quotas.

Briefly About the Pros and Cons

+ Full EU higher education degree
+ Opens the path to science and research
+ Education is cheaper than in many Western countries
+ Visa for 3−6 months with extension inside Germany
+ Student transportation pass for free travel

— A blocked account with € 12,000 every year
— An 11-year school diploma alone is not enough
— High language proficiency requirements
— Housing, food, and insurance expenses: around € 1,000 per month
— A long path toward employment in your specialty and stable income
— You can only work up to 20 hours per week

Not as simple and affordable as it sounds, right? However, there is another path…

Option 2: Dual Vocational Training System (Ausbildung) — A Worthy Alternative “With a Salary”

Now let’s talk about that very opportunity to study in Germany for free while earning money at the same time.

The "Ausbildung" program is Germany’s dual education system, perfectly combining theory and practice. Imagine not just studying, but immediately immersing yourself in real work, receiving a salary, and building a career at leading German companies.

What You Get:

Free education and a European diploma

A salary during studies from € 900 to € 1,300 per month. And if it exceeds € 927 — you do NOT need a blocked account.

Half of your health insurance paid by the company

Paid vacation

Social benefits and sometimes housing assistance

Employment opportunities after the program

A visa valid for one year with easy annual extensions, without worrying about saving money for a blocked account

Requirements: Minimum German level B1, willingness to study, and a school diploma.

❗️Just don’t confuse it with the school-level "Ausbildung" program — make sure you choose the dual vocational version.

How It Works

You alternate between classes at a vocational school (Berufsschule) and practical training at a company. For example, I had 3 weeks of studying and 3 weeks of practical work. This allowed me to integrate into the profession immediately and gain invaluable experience in the German healthcare system.

By the way, I studied to become a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MTL).
Through some of the programs we work with, Germany gives anyone the opportunity to live in the country for an entire year while covering all basic expenses — housing, food, insurance, and even language courses.

      <turbo:content>

The Most Affordable Way to Move to Germany Without Language Skills or Work Experience

These programs allow anyone to spend a full year in Germany while all basic expenses are covered — housing, meals, insurance, and even language classes. At the same time, your German level, age, and previous work experience do not matter. And after participating, you can legally stay in the country for studies or work.

Is it true that anyone can move to Germany? Over 7 years, I have personally seen hundreds of relocation stories through these highly accessible programs and helped more than 600 people fulfill their dream. And yes, I also moved and lived in Germany with full financial support, so from personal experience I know that it works!

Now I feel it is my mission to show the most affordable ways to relocate to Germany — methods that don’t require thousands of euros in your bank account or extraordinary abilities. That’s why I reveal, through real examples, the path that others stay silent about.

Volunteering in Germany Is Not Free Labor

The first thing to remember before talking about the programs themselves: volunteering is not about unpaid labor or "dirty" social work.

This discovery played a key role not only in my life, but also in the lives of hundreds of people for whom we secured a total of € 7,800,000 in funding.

I’m talking about government volunteer programs in German non-profit organizations. There are several types:

Voluntary Social Year: up to age 27 — FSJ (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr)

Voluntary Ecological Year: up to age 27 — FÖJ (Freiwilliges Ökologisches Jahr)

Federal Volunteer Service: from age 18 with no upper age limit — BFD (Bundesfreiwilligendienst)

Aside from the age differences, the core idea is the same: you come to Germany to provide volunteer assistance in social, cultural, medical, sports, or environmental organizations.

In return, you receive:

✅ National category D work visa for one year with the possibility of extension up to 18 months total
✅ Comfortable housing and meals
✅ Health insurance
✅ Language courses
✅ Paid vacation and sick leave
✅ Up to € 1,200 per month — funding including "pocket money" for personal expenses

For example, this is how the people I helped relocate live:

What’s especially nice: due to its special status, "pocket money" ("Taschengeld") is tax-free.*

According to § 3 paragraph 11 of the German Income Tax Act (§ 3 Abs. 11 Einkommensteuergesetz (EStG)), such payments are considered social support (sozialer Zuschuss) and are not subject to taxation, meaning they are not included in taxable income calculations.

This means participants can plan their budget more easily without diving deeply into tax bureaucracy. In addition, you won’t have to spend money on basic necessities because the hosting organization already covers them.

So what’s the catch? Why would Germany pay foreigners to live in the country for a year? I explained this in detail in a separate publication on my Telegram channel, along with a brief historical overview.

What You Need To Do and Who Can Apply

No, this is not necessarily about elderly care, floor cleaning, or physically difficult labor. There are 5 of the most popular fields where fully funded positions are available for foreigners.

And no, you don’t need a high level of German or higher education. Often, a 9th-grade school certificate and basic A1-A2 German are enough — something that can be achieved in just a few months.

1. Cultural Sector

Work in museums, theaters, cultural institutions, hobby clubs, and organizations preserving cultural heritage.

For example, at the small theater "Alte Werkstatt e.V." the tasks included: participating in rehearsal and event planning, communicating with actors and visitors, and helping prepare productions, including costumes and organizing the space.

The language level requirements here may be slightly higher — B1 or even B2 — but the work allows you to immerse yourself deeply in German culture and guarantees unforgettable experiences.

2. Medical Sector

I’ll never stop repeating: to start working in German healthcare, you do not need a recognized diploma or even higher education.

Volunteer programs offer many positions in German clinics. Responsibilities usually include assisting medical staff: restocking supplies, light patient care, transportation assistance, document management, and even participation in surgeries.

Moreover, if you prove yourself at the workplace, the clinic may help you recognize your diploma or even support your education if you don’t yet have one. Below I’ll share one such story where we helped someone find their place and begin the path toward diploma recognition.

And in the article "Where and How to Study in Germany for Free: A Breakdown Based on Personal Experience," you’ll learn how to get an education with a salary and without a blocked account.

3. Sports Sector

Usually this means working with children’s sports teams, assisting coaches, or organizing sports events.

For example, for the sports club "ASC Göttingen von 1846" (Göttingen), responsibilities included checking sports equipment, assisting with organization, monitoring event schedules, and ensuring participant safety. Participants also had the opportunity to attend seminars and receive a Level C coaching license.

Finding such positions may take slightly longer, but nothing is impossible.

4. Environmental Sector

Work on farms, in nature reserves, animal shelters, and environmental projects. There is even a separate program for this: the "Voluntary Ecological Year" — FÖJ.

For example, you can join one of Germany’s largest environmental organizations ("BUND") and help restore ecosystems, protect birds, and organize educational activities for schools.

I shared even more examples of eco-volunteer positions in a postу on my Telegram channel.

5. Social Sector

This is probably the most profitable and popular direction. These organizations often provide the best social packages and above-average funding.

For example, many of my clients relocate as assistant educators and teaching assistants. There are also many positions in centers for children with disabilities. I personally completed my volunteer year in one such boarding facility. I shared my full daily routine and responsibilities in this YouTube video.

"Interestingly, the most difficult tasks are usually handled by experienced professionals, while volunteers help with softer and emotionally meaningful aspects."

Relocation Stories: What It Looks Like in Real Life

Becoming German Language Teachers Even With Only A2 German

Meet Katya and Mari. They received positions in Bad Harzburg as German language teachers for young Russian-speaking refugees.

▪️ Katya, 22 years old, beginner advertising specialist and citizen of Kazakhstan
▪️ Mari, 27 years old, English teacher, citizen of Russia and Armenia

For each of them, we developed a unique self-presentation strategy, emphasizing exactly what hosting organizations were looking for. At one point Katya received an overwhelming number of interview invitations — she practically broke a record among our clients. In the end, only 2 weeks passed from the start of the search to signing the contract!

At the same time, Mari’s situation was just as successful, and the girls ended up choosing the same offer. That’s how they met, became friends and roommates, and now both continue developing their own projects alongside volunteering.

And yes, during their interviews both only had A2 German. But as their future supervisor said:

"The best way to learn a language is to start teaching it."

A Path Into German Healthcare Without a Recognized Diploma

Another one of my clients, Daria, had worked as a cosmetic doctor in Russia for over 5 years but felt she had hit a ceiling. That’s what led her to the idea of changing countries.

When she came to us, she already had a contract for language courses in Germany. But only because she didn’t know that the Federal Volunteer Service (BFD) program allows you to start working in a clinic immediately and is suitable even if you are over 27 years old.

After several interviews, Daria found a position in Bavaria, where her boyfriend lives, and chose a place in the gastroenterology department in Passau. She is now confidently moving toward recognition of her medical diploma for a future career. She recently received her B2 language certificate.

In this post I explained in more detail what difficulties she faced and shared photos from her workplace.

What If I Don’t Know the Language at All?!

There are plenty of such stories too. For interviews, you only need to master the most basic A2-level phrases. This is just above beginner level — being able to slowly talk about your goals, dreams, and handle simple everyday conversations. This can realistically be achieved within 2−4 months of study.

In addition, we always prepare clients for interviews to maximize their chances of success. Because we know exactly what should be emphasized.

By the way, even my mother at age 49 managed to learn beginner-level German and also received a contract. I talked about it in this YouTube video.

Can You Stay in Germany After the Program?

I have no doubt that relocating with this level of immersion is the best way to establish yourself in the country, find a job, or enroll in studies.

Just think about it:

✅ You receive free language courses with daily practice with native speakers
✅ Your housing, food, and other basic needs are covered for an entire year
✅ You build new connections and gain real work experience for your resume
✅ You can personally attend international conferences and job fairs

There are no similar programs anywhere else in the world where you can relocate without major investments and with a low language level.

At the same time, to change your residence status and stay in the country, you do not necessarily need to leave Germany. In fact, this can be done even earlier than after one year if you find a job or enroll in studies.

So How Affordable Is This Path Really?

I calculated the approximate relocation expenses in this post, and here’s a small surprise: they do not exceed the price of a one-week vacation somewhere in Turkey!
Daria worked as a cosmetologist in Russia for 10 years but felt she had reached a dead end in her career. We found her a placement directly at a clinic in Germany, even without diploma recognition.

We wanted to study and try ourselves in something different. But in Kazakhstan it was very difficult to achieve this: we worked a lot and were limited financially and in terms of time.

However, they were also worried and concerned:

Would they be able to relocate together?

Would they work in the same organization and live together?

How would the host organization react?

What if the placements were in different cities?

But we reassured them, because organizations are usually happy to take two volunteers at once if they have multiple open positions. In fact, it can even be easier for them this way! And indeed — the real difficulties turned out to be elsewhere…

Their first interview was scheduled just one month after starting work with us. However, their German was still very weak. In addition, due to personal circumstances, the couple paused their search for some time.

More than a year later, they returned to active searching and received contracts in different branches of the same organization + shared housing! In total, this required only 5−7 interviews. But the adventures did not end there 😰

This happens very rarely with couples, but Alena’s visa was approved after 26 days, while Alexander received a refusal. The consulate was not convinced that he would return after the program, which is an important nuance for the visa. Yes, even despite the fact that you are officially allowed to stay in Germany after participation in the program.

Naturally, we were not going to give up!

We prepared all the documents again, expanded the motivation letter for the consulate, and most importantly — advised them on how to properly maintain communication with the organization so they would definitely wait for them.
